Falling coal demand drives Australia's growing trade deficit

An expanding trade deficit could push Australia's economy into a serious slowdown, after the nation barely escaped a technical recession in the first quarter, economists said. Australia's trade shortfall ballooned to $448 million in May, mostly because of a decline in coal shipments. "The global recession is starting to hit Australian export income," said Su-Lin Ong, a senior economist at RBC Capital Markets.
