OGE, ETA Announce Plans to Construct 765 Kilovolt Transmission in Oklahoma to the Kansas Border

Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OGE) announced today it is partnering with Electric Transmission America (ETA), a joint-venture of subsidiaries of American Electric Power Company, Inc. and MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co., to form Horizon Transmission LLC, with plans to construct ultra-high capacity, 765 kilovolt transmission in western Oklahoma. The development follows Westar Energy's announcement in May that it is partnering with ETA to form a joint-venture company, Prairie Wind Transmission LLC, with plans to construct the first 765 kV transmission system west of the Mississippi. OGE's announcement further advances progress toward a transmission superhighway in the region.
"We are pleased by Horizon Transmission's announcement today," said Kelly Harrison, Westar's vice president, transmission operations and environmental services, and president, Prairie Wind Transmission. "Horizon will construct the same type of ultra-high capacity line to connect with the one we've proposed to build to the Oklahoma border. ETA is a partner in both projects and has unparalleled experience building and operating ultra high capacity transmission lines."
Prairie Wind Transmission LLC plans to construct ultra-high capacity transmission extending from the Wichita area west to the Dodge City area and then south, southwest to the Kansas-Oklahoma border near Medicine Lodge. Horizon Transmission's initial projects will include 765 kV lines from Woodward northwest to Guymon in the Oklahoma Panhandle and from Woodward north to the Kansas border to connect to the Prairie Wind 765 kV project. Both companies' projects help realize the Southwest Power Pool's vision for ultra-high capacity transmission in the region, as well as promote the growth of wind energy in western Kansas and Oklahoma.
