Taiwan aims to increase its reliance on renewable energy to 10% of the island's total electricity generation capacity, or 4.1 gigawatts, by 2010 from around 8% currently, Taiwan's Bureau of Energy said in a statement Sunday.

Much of Taiwan's future growth in renewable energy will come from wind power, the bureau said. Taiwan currently has 103 wind power units with a total electricity generation capacity of 168,000 kilowatts.

Taiwan government plans to increase wind-powered electricity generation capacity to 1.2 gigawatts by 2010, a bureau official said Sunday, declining to be named.

Taiwan has reduced greenhouse gas production by 250,000 tons a year by replacing fossil-fuel generated power with the 103 wind power units, the bureau said.

The island, which imports 98% of the energy used, will also continue to develop other types of renewable energy, including solar power and bio-fuel, the bureau official said.
