China's coal imports for September rose 17.3% on year to 3.62 million metric tons, data from the General Administration of Customs confirmed Thursday.
The growth in imports was the lowest in 14 months.
This was partly due to a decline in imports from Vietnam, the largest source of coal to China. China imported 1.84 million tons of coal from Vietnam in September, down 4.2% from a year earlier, the first on-year decline so far this year.
Imports from Indonesia continued to rise, though at a slower pace compared with previous months. China imported 887,797 tons of coal from Indonesia last month versus 324,464 tons a year earlier.
In the first nine months, China imported 38.61 million tons of coal, up 47.6% from a year ago.
China maintained its status as a net coal exporter for the third straight month in September, with its exports down 28.5% on year at 4.47 million tons.
Coal exports for the first three quarters totaled 38.01 million tons, down 20.9% from a year earlier, the data showed.
Coke exports for September fell 4.7% on year to 1.47 million tons, while exports for the first nine months totaled 11.73 million tons, up 9.6% on year.
