The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission does not need more authority from Congress regarding gas-fired power plant fuel supply, FERC member Cheryl LaFleur told lawmakers Tuesday.

"We have broad authority over the competitive electric markets so we should first try to address this problem with the responsibility and the authority we have before we look for new legislation," LaFleur told reporters after a hearing of the US House of Representatives Energy & Commerce Committee's power panel.

The hearing focused on the reliability impact of the power industry's increasing reliance on gas as a fuel.
